Silicone- vs. Water-Based Makeup

Hi everyone!

I've noticed that when I go onto the COVERGIRL Web site there seems to be this debate between silicone-based foundation and water-based foundation. Silicone-based foundations, such as the Clean Liquid Makeup for sensitive skin, is a thicker formula which allows for better coverage for blemishes and uneven skin tones. Then there is the water-based foundations like the TRUblend Liquid Makeup, which are more lightweight on your skin and has less chance of clogging pores. However, the interesting thing about this debate between the two is that there doesn't seem to be a winner.

Let me explain. When you read the comments and reviews for the Clean Liquid Makeup, everyone complains that the makeup is too thick. If you go on the TRUblend page, everyone says the makeup is too thin and it doesn't cover up skin imperfections. If I were COVERGIRL, I would be so frustrated. First everyone wants a thicker makeup, then they complain that it's TOO thick. Then when COVERGIRL comes out with a thinner foundation, nope, that's not good enough either because that's TOO thin. People, what exactly is it that you want? COVERGIRL is offering two different types of foundation that both have benefits and drawbacks, depending on your preferences, yet neither choice is good enough.

Let me let you in on a little secret: if you use other products in addition to either foundation, your chances of achieving your desired results will increase. If you have a water-based foundation that is not covering up blemishes, it is possible that you may have to use a different formula for skin treatment. I use Aveeno Clear Complexion Cream Cleanser. My skin isn't fantastic, but I am able to use the TRUblend foundation without every pimple I have shining through. If you don't want to switch cleansing products, that's fine; you can also use a concealer stick or cream in addition to the foundation. Concealer sticks are a fantastic little invention when paired with foundation. All you do is put some concealer on the blemish before putting on your foundation, and it makes coverage look 10 times better. If you don't think the blemish is covered up enough, you can always dab some more concealer on it and blend with the foundation.

For the silicone-based makeup, the solution may be as simple as using less foundation on your skin. If you are used to thinner foundation and you switch to a silicone base, you are already conditioned to pile a lot of it onto your face because that's what you're used to doing with the thin makeup. So of course when you load on the silicone base it's going to look like you're wearing a mask. I would suggest using makeup sponges for silicone-based foundation. The sponge will soak up any excess makeup so it doesn't just settle on your skin and look caked-on. Another little trick you could do is mix the silicone-based foundation with some water to make it a little thinner. I can't really give you a specific measurement because it's all based on personal preference. I would just start out with about a teaspoon of water and increase the amount until it becomes thin enough for your liking.

As far as my own views on the silicone/water debate, I've used both types of foundation, and to be completely honest I don't really have a preference. I'm currently using the TRUblend Liquid Makeup (405), which has a water base, and that is working out great for me. On the other hand, I've used silicone-based foundation before and that complimented my skin as well. Both types have their pros and cons, and it's up to you to test them out and see which one fits best for you. If you find that neither kind works for you, there's always powder foundation, both in loose and compact form. COVERGIRL offers plenty of choices for foundation, so if you use one and realize that it's not for you, please do not despair. Just go onto the Web site and take a look at what the company has to offer. I'll bet you will be able to find something that works for you.

Alright, this is usually the part where I tell you what makeup I'm currently wearing, but the problem is I'm not currently wearing any makeup. I woke up late this morning and didn't have time to put any on. Next time, I promise.

Peace.
